The Bristol Old Vic

December 14th 2011

Yesterday I went to Bristol to check out how Bristol Old Vic were using our space in Avon Meads Retail Park. They have transformed the huge JJB store into an impressive rehearsal space, management hub and storage area. Huge curtains cut the massive shop floor down into a manageable size, which plays host to production meetings and the all-important rehearsals for the Old Vic’s Christmas play, Coram Boy, which is being staged in support of Childline.

Out the back, in what used to be the staff and management area of the shop, was also bustling with life. All the main rooms were  being used – with facilities including a kitchen, two wardrobe rooms and a stage management office. It was hard to believe this was a meanwhile use project and not a permanent arrangement. It was a genuine hive of activity and it was great to see a new lease of life being breathed into a space that had been idle for such a long time.

Many thanks to the Bristol Old Vic for letting me come down and have a nose around – if you’re around Bristol this Christmas, be sure to check out Coram Boy at Colston Hall from the 22-30 December. From the looks of the rehearsal it’s going to be a cracker!

Check out the video above showing the Bristol Old Vic in action, and have a think about how your organisation could make use of an empty property like this!
